DT & Engineering Highlights
It is always lovely when projects come together after weeks of hard work. Just some of the finished projects to come out of DT & Engineering last term were:
- Year 6`s Dragsters: children designed and printed their dragsters from an original template (with lots modifying them) and then raced them which they found was an acquired skill!
- Year 6 also completed their softwood box project that involved attempting to master the dovetail and finger joint from wood. The final boxes were polished using Briwax.
- Year 5 have been prototyping using cardboard techniques this term and completed their cardboard cameras.
- as a way of learning about wind turbines, Year 4 experimented with different materials and propellers to try and catch the wind and see how much current they could generate. They then made a whirlygig to further understand turbines, that self-adjust to point in the direction of the wind.
- Year 7 made battery powered cars. They started by designing in cardboard before constructing their prototypes in wood. They needed to understand the micro switch and solder together the circuit, before adding pulleys to the motor and the axle.
Congratulations on a busy and productive term, and on developing an incredible range of design and engineering skills!

This stunning footage from our 80th Anniversary Garden Party in June, captures something genuine and very, very special ...people who left Holmewood decades apart, discovering they have the same wonderful things to say about Holmewood House!
At the end of last term, over 700 members of our community came together on the North Lawn to mark eighty years since the founding of Holmewood House, swapping stories across the generations, spotting old teachers and old friends and proving that Holmewood bonds are for life.
The faces may have changed over the years and the uniforms are very different! But what Holmewood represents to its community and supporters stays the same.
Eighty years on, the values Holmewood was built on are exactly what make it the school of choice today. We’re building forward with the same purpose that started it all in 1945.
Here’s to the next eighty years!
