Prep

Holmewood House School welcomes children at any stage of their Prep School journey, subject to the availability of places, a report from the child’s current school and an informal assessment from Year 5. The Prep School is divided into Lower School (Years 3, 4 & 5) and Upper School (Years 6 – 8).

In the Lower School prep years 3, 4 & 5, children are nurtured by their Form Teachers whose purpose it is to ensure the welfare and happiness of the children in their care. Most Lower School prep lessons are taught by form teachers, while the children also benefit from prep school specialist teachers and departments. This additional resource enables your child to continue to grow and flourish on their Holmewood House school journey.

Year 5 is included in Lower School, where children have a Form Teacher but are taught by subject specialists for all lessons while remining under the watchful eye of Lower School to aid the transition. Numerous new experiences are introduced to help children develop their maturity and independence and helps us enact the aims and ethos we strive to embody on a daily basis.

Year 6 is classed as Upper School, along with Years 7 & 8. The Common Entrance Syllabus is introduced in Years 7 & 8. Our Year 7 pupils mature into well-rounded young people, more confident and socially aware, and better equipped at 13 to face the rigours and demands of senior schools than they are at 11. We continue to build on this confidence and awareness through year 8.

The Holmewood House music curriculum for prep school children offers some of the best practices to encourage your child to develop their creative abilities. The pupils learn how to work in groups and understand the fundamental principles of composition and performance. Offering some of the most engaging and exciting music lessons in Tunbridge Wells, our music department is equipped with many percussion instruments as well as orchestral instruments with which to aid pupils’ understanding of instrumentation.

As one of the leading Private Prep Schools in Tunbridge Wells, our specialist teachers take pride in offering not only the educational and subject support every child needs, but also in offering outstanding pastoral care. Every member of our staff shares responsibility for the pastoral provision provided by Holmewood, and seek to actively represent the aims, ethos, and values our independent school has come to be renowned for. Children are also allocated to a House and the Housemaster or Housemistress is also responsible for the pastoral provision of the children in their House. Regardless of what age of year your child joins Holmewood House School, our aims and mission are intrinsic to their development and preparation for senior independent schools at 13+.

Our Arts programme enables children to develop the ability to understand and express themselves more fully, while engaging in this creative and stimulating subject. Fostering artistic tendencies at this young age gives the children an unrivalled ability to appreciate different styles, genres, and techniques.

We would love to hear from you and invite you to get in touch with our admissions team on 01892 860006 to talk about your child’s prep school journey and how Holmewood House School can provide a solid foundation for their educational development.
