Mathematics

The Mathematics curriculum is closely tied to the requirements of the National Curriculum up to Year 6 (the end of Key Stage 2). In Years 7 and 8 courses are geared towards the requirements of the Common Entrance and Scholarship examinations of the public schools these incorporate the requirements of the National Curriculum.

From the start of the Pre-Prep up to Year 5 the Heinemann Mathematics Scheme is used, with additional material from other sources being used as appropriate. In Year 6 the course is based round the book KS2 Mathematics and in Years 7 and 8 the main textbooks used are Essential Skills in Maths, Books 3 and 4. At all levels, and particularly in the later years, teachers make use of worksheets and materials produced internally and specifically designed to meet the needs of the class or group that they are teaching.

The department uses ICT to enhance their teaching. Junior forms have regular periods of Mathematics in one of the computer rooms. In senior forms, computer topics are covered either within the ICT suite, or by using one of the classroom computers for demonstration purposes.

The department has a record of good results at both Common Entrance and public school Scholarships.
