Tatler Schools Guide 2020

Now in its 75th year, Holmewood House is thriving under Scott Carnochan’s leadership. Pupils adore him and parents credit him with ‘changing the ethos to make it more positive than pressured’, and it works: 2019’s cohort won 31 scholarships to top schools. He is dedicated to make HHS ‘an exciting educational community where people come first’; he’s introduced a wellbeing programme, a counsellor and a ’pat dog’ named Albert, while dreaded Saturday School has been replaced with sport. Art is ‘outstanding’ (‘even the most reticent artists blossom,’ say parents), and there’s a 350-seat theatre for drama.

The pupils are confident and engaged learners who respond with enthusiasm to the teachers’ high level of expertise, which enables them to develop their skills to an advanced level and those with a particular talent to excel.
