Boys’ Sport 7.3.25

1st Team vs Hurstpierpoint College

The 1st team were beaten by another very strong Hurst side; good on the ball and aggressive without. The second half saw some improved individual performances and, hopefully, the boys will have learned from the experience, ready to go again next time.

Boys-2nd Team vs Hurstpierpoint College

Hurst were always going to be a tough opponent, and despite a hard-fought effort, we were beaten 1-5. However, every player gave 100%, leaving everything on the pitch and finishing the game absolutely exhausted. The determination and work rate were excellent, and with continued effort and learning from each match, success is just around the corner!

3rd Team vs Hurstpierpoint College

Holmewood looked fantastic under the sunshine, but the heat seemed to take its toll on our team, as we struggled to get to the ball first. We played in phases, showing glimpses of quality, but against strong opposition, inconsistency proved costly, resulting in a 0-5 loss. This game provided valuable lessons, and with renewed energy and focus, we’ll come back stronger next week!

U11A vs UKSA Hockey Tournament

The U11A team competed in the UKSA hockey tournament, putting in a strong and determined performance throughout the group stage. They started with a fantastic 2-0 win over Brambletye, an impressive result after losing to them 1-0 the previous week. This was followed by two hard-fought goalless draws against Cranmore and Amherst, showcasing the team’s solid defensive discipline and teamwork.

With Amherst finishing on the same points as us, the group standings were decided by a thrilling penalty shuffle decider. Under pressure, Oscar and Ethan showed great composure with clinical finishes, securing our place at the top of the group and advancing to the cup quarter-finals.

In the quarter-final, we faced a strong New Beacon side and, despite battling hard, were defeated 0-3. The team displayed great resilience, skill, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament, making it a memorable experience. Their efforts and teamwork were commendable, and they should be proud of their achievements. Well done, boys! DG

U11B vs  Hurstpierpoint College

A severely depleted (due to a combination of factors) Colts B team travelled into the heart of West Sussex for a fixture against Hurstpierpoint College. On a day when the sun shone, the sky was azure blue and the venue stunning (see photos), a large crowd was drawn to watch the spectacle unfold. Against a very strong Hurst side the boys competed valiantly and gave everything to the cause. Sadly, goals were scored and it was 3-0 to Hurst at half time after some fine attacking play. After half time the boys pushed forward and scored a superb goal from Aaron O. Surely it was worth more than one goal! The boys pushed on forward searching for a second and third and consequently left gaps at the back which Hurst exploited with 3 further goals leaving the final score 6-1 but it was certainly closer than this scoreline would suggest. Oliver G made some fine saves in goal and Aaron O performed superbly with his tireless running but above all, it was a team effort.

It was great to catch up with Old Holmewoodians – Bea Joyner, Amelie Lawson, Darcey Philips, Wilf Curran and Eddie Sheppard who are currently studying at Hurst and they came to watch the end of the match. All were in fine form. PM-J

U11C vs Hurstpierpoint College

On Wednesday, the U11C team played a tough match against Hurst, showing great determination and resilience despite the result. They worked hard in defence, with strong tackling and teamwork, while Louis impressed with a brilliant solo run down the centre line, evading multiple players. Although they struggled to contain Hurst’s attacking pressure, the boys remained committed and played with great spirit until the final whistle. Despite the loss, they should be proud of their effort and use this experience to improve ahead of next week’s match against Cumnor.

U10A vs Hurstpierpoint College

The U10A team travelled to Hurstpierpoint to take on their Colts A side, a team that had previously faced our U11A squad. From the outset, the boys worked hard to keep the opposition at bay, with Hurst dominating possession and creating multiple chances that they were unable to convert. Our defensive shape held strong in the opening stages, showing good resilience under pressure.

Early on, we attempted to play through the middle, but Hurst’s pressing game forced frequent turnovers, limiting our ability to build attacks. Recognising this, we adjusted our positioning to try and play out from the back more effectively. This provided some improvement, though we still struggled to spread the ball wide and make use of the space on the flanks. Hurst’s excellent stick control and confident attacking play, particularly down the right wing, allowed them to maintain sustained pressure and win key one-on-one battles.

When we managed to break through their high press, we showed glimpses of our attacking potential, creating several promising chances. However, we found it difficult to generate enough power and accuracy in our shots to capitalise on these opportunities. Both goalkeepers had standout performances, making crucial saves to keep the score line respectable. Henry Johnston was particularly impressive, kicking the ball to the wings and help relieve pressure by launching counterattacks.

Despite the game being one-sided at times, the boys remained positive and showed commendable determination. They kept working hard until the final whistle, demonstrating resilience and a willingness to adapt. In our post-match discussions, they reflected well on the challenges they faced and were eager to learn from the experience. Their attitude and ability to stay focused, even against strong opposition with a number of club players, were great positives to take forward.

Well done to the team for their perseverance and willingness to improve!

U10B vs Hurstpierpoint College

The U10B hockey team travelled to Hurst, where the opposition had fewer players, so we mixed the teams so everyone could get plenty of game time. The boys adapted well to the mixed teams, showing great teamwork and sportsmanship throughout. It was a valuable afternoon of hockey, played in great spirit under the sunshine.

U9 vs Saint Ronan’s School

The Year 4 boys travelled to St Ronan’s on a beautiful sunny afternoon, ready for an exciting round of matches. Each game was closely contested, with both teams displaying great determination and effort. The boys worked hard throughout, competing well in every challenge and showing a strong team spirit.

Although there were plenty of positive moments, it was clear that further work is needed on refining their basic skills. Improving passing accuracy will be a key focus going forward, as well as encouraging the boys to make better use of the width of the pitch to create attacking opportunities. Developing these areas will help them build more fluid and effective gameplay.

With their next fixture against St Michael’s at home, the boys have a great opportunity to put these lessons into practice.

U8 vs Saint Ronan’s School

The U8s welcomed Saint Ronan’s to Holmewood on a gloriously sunny afternoon, setting the stage for an exciting set of matches. We split into four teams, with mixed A/B and C/D pools, allowing us to create larger-sided games that provided an appropriate challenge for all players. This format ensured a great balance of competition, pushing the boys to test their skills in a structured and engaging environment.

The matches were highly competitive, with all teams stepping up their game and demonstrating excellent determination. Most of the games ended in draws, which reflected the closely matched nature of the teams and the high level of play on display. The boys showed great energy and enthusiasm, moving off the ball well and demonstrating strong spatial awareness to create passing options. Their improved positioning and teamwork allowed for fluid transitions between attack and defence.

Although we were occasionally punished for handling errors in front of goal, the boys showed great resilience and did not let setbacks affect their confidence. Instead, they responded positively, regrouping quickly and launching some fantastic attacking moves. Their ability to stay composed and continue pressing forward highlighted the significant progress they have made since the start of the season.

Overall, it was a brilliant afternoon of hockey, showcasing how much the boys have developed in both skill and game awareness. Their positive attitude, teamwork, and determination were fantastic to see, and they should be proud of their performances.
