Holmewood House School experienced a magical and unforgettable moment as part of its National Storytelling Week celebrations when none other than multi-award-winning author, comedian, and philanthropist David Walliams OBE made a surprise visit.
Throughout the week, pupils engaged in various storytelling activities in the Creative Learning Hub, culminating in an extraordinary event arranged by Catherine Duncumb, the school’s inspiring Creative Learning Lead. With the support of a generous member of the school’s parental community, a mystery guest was secured to read to the Prep School and discuss their literary inspirations.
With great secrecy surrounding his arrival, pupils remained in their classrooms until the moment was right. As anticipation grew, David Walliams arrived discreetly, waiting backstage in the school’s theatre. The excitement reached a fever pitch when Mrs. O’Sullivan read the opening passage from Mr Stink, only for Walliams himself to suddenly appear, descending the stairs to a chorus of rapturous applause and sheer disbelief.
Meeting a world-renowned author and celebrity is one thing, but it was Walliams’ warmth, humour, and engaging storytelling that truly captivated his audience. He spoke about his inspirations, how he creates his beloved characters, and even read passages from his books, leaving both pupils and staff spellbound.
The session concluded with a lively Q&A, where Walliams charmed everyone with his wit and generosity. One of the most memorable moments was his response to a question about his writing journey: “Comprehensions made me the writer I am today.” The statement has since been proudly displayed in the Head of English’s classroom as a source of motivation for budding young writers.
Before departing, Walliams took the time to pose for photos and chat with star-struck staff, leaving an indelible mark on all who attended.
If inspiration had a name, it might very well be David Walliams. His visit to Holmewood House School will undoubtedly be remembered as a defining moment for all the young storytellers in attendance.
