Through teamwork and creativity, Year 2 has brought history to life by designing and crafting their own old-fashioned toys. This hands-on project, part of their ‘Changes in Living Memory’ topic, has sparked conversations about the differences between toys from the past and present, highlighting the value of imagination and collaboration in learning. Year 2 had a fantastic time this week combining our topics history, English, and art in a creative project about wartime carrot biscuits! The class followed instructions to bake their own version of these historical treats, and while doing so, they explored bossy verbs (imperatives) to help guide the process.
In English, the children learned all about how instructions are written and the importance of clear commands. They practiced writing their own commands and instructions, which they applied to their biscuit-making activity.
The project also gave Year 2 the chance to explore how food and packaging have changed over time. They compared wartime packaging with what we use today and even designed their own packaging for the biscuits they created in art class.
It was a wonderful hands-on experience that brought history, language, and creativity together in a fun and engaging way! Catherine Thorley
