Girls’ Sport 22.11.24

This week saw the last of girls hockey for the year. On a bitterly cold afternoon, the year 5 and 6 girls played against Somerhill whilst some of the senior girls played in a tournament at Marden. Netball training was in action for some too getting for the season ahead.

2nd Team Hockey

Our 2nd Team girls had the opportunity to play at the UKSA tournament at Marden, and absolutely thrived. We played some great pieces of hockey throughout the day. Our defence played a pivotal part to the success of the day, staying strong and keeping the opposition out multiple times. Saskia made some really important saves which lifted our spirits throughout the day. Our midfield and attack were relentless, tearing the opposition apart to create chances at goal. To play at a first team standard hockey tournament and to reach the Plate semi finals is a feat in itself. The girls played tremendous hockey the entire day and the results speak for themselves to just how well they played. Their last ever day of hockey together was a special one and I could not be happier with the progression throughout the season. The results are below.

Results: Game 1 vs Roedean Lost 1-0

Game 2 vs Claremont Drew 0-0

Game 3 vs Sevenoaks 3rds Won 2-0

Game 4 vs Feltonfleet Lost 3-0

Plate Semi final vs Cottesmore Drew 0-0 then went to a sudden death in the Shuffles and Lost (DG)

U11A Team Hockey

The Under 11 team played at Somerhill on an incredibly small pitch with very small “D”s. It was extremely cold and we did take some time to get going, conceding 2 goals on the break from Somerhill early on in the first half… the size of the pitch meant the transition from defence to attack was just too quick and it took us time to adapt our play. Holmewood had all the play in the 2nd half and dominated the game, but just couldn’t convert the play into goals. There was some strong play in the centre from Lavinia and the defence worked hard to keep the ball moving up the wings. We had some great moments of play and chances to score, but the goalie for the opposition saved goal after goal. A very even match for the final one of the year which was well fought by our girls. Well done girls!! SP

U11B Team Hockey

This away fixture played on a smaller pitch than our home ground meant we had to use all the space wisely, play a patient game whilst keeping possession and passing accurately. There were innumerable attempts at goal at both ends. All the players made concerted efforts but in a small and

overcrowded D it was a difficult exercise for us. Somerhill kept the pressure up and we just couldn’t find a way to beat their goalie. They scored 3 goals when we slightly lost concentration and panic set in. Nevertheless the girls have given their very best throughout this term and shown how well they work together. (POM Charlotte and Iona) SE

U11C Team Hockey

This away fixture was our last of the season and although the final score did not go our way, it was encouraging to see Holmewood play from the start to a really good level. Everyone showed improvement in their stick work and dribbling with the ball at speed. Sometimes the link broke down where the ball was not quite accurate enough but the endeavour was always there. Stirling work from everyone with two superb goals from Ffion and Deya (POM).

Towards the end, our heads dropped and we allowed Somerhill to dominate play, but a valiant effort. Well done to Ayla, Oluwajuwan, Isabella, Cassie Ffion and Deya SE

U10A Team Hockey

U10’s had a brilliant final match of the season against Somerhill. Starting off the game pretty even on pitch, by half time the Holmewood girls were managing to push up into the D multiple times, just unable to get it in the goal. Second half started and with some strong play down the right wing and across, Ella managed to sweep in a goal. Unfortunately, a fired up Somerhill quickly retaliated. With a minute left on the clock and a Somerhill side that swept across to the left, they scored again. Some brilliant play by all. Temi was awarded POM. KB

U10B Team Hockey

U10 Bs team had another brilliant game against Somerhill, their defence was great with neither team scoring and finishing 0-0. Fiye got girl of the game for her amazing skills on the wing.

U10C Team Hockey

The U10 girls C team for hockey had a great match against Somerhill today, unfortunately they lost 4-2, but didn’t go down without a fight. They won the second half scoring 2-1 against the Somerhill team, with Ellie scoring both goals up front. Anne received girl of the game for always being on the ball and trying her hardest.

Under 9 Girls Netball

Apart from it being super cold we had a great afternoon of netball against DPS. The girls played 5 a-side to ensure they were all running around as much as possible and we changed a variety of positions too. The girls were working hard to try and move into a space and we will continue to work hard on this in our lessons. A great start to the season, well done girls. TB

Sport Scholarship Readiness Programme

This week those pupils on the Sports Scholarship Readiness Programme travelled to Bede’s who kindly invited us for a morning workshop. The pupils experienced a session with Tony Morris who specialises in the development of young athletes, sports injuries, prehab and rehab. The pupils learnt how important the mechanics of the foot are in keeping themselves injury free, as well as how to use a roller effectively and some visualisation.

The pupils then had a session in the snow with Robert Redhead, as Head of Hockey, and performed a variety of drills and practices. It was great morning for the pupils and gave them a small insight into sport at senior school.
