Antarctica Talk with David Edwards
Holmewood House welcomed back David Edwards who gave a talk to Year 5 about his trip to Antarctica. They learnt about Antarctica as a record-breaking continent – the windiest, the coldest and the driest – Did you know that Antarctica is actually a desert? The pupils were captivated by his encounters with penguins and seals and enjoyed hearing about his stories with the baby penguin being curious about his camera and the leopard seal nearly having his leg for lunch! Pupils were given the opportunity to try on specialised equipment used in sub-zero temperatures as well as learning about the equipment used for mountaineering and surviving on icy surfaces. There were lots of questions asked including ‘how fast can a penguin sledge on its tummy?’ ‘Are penguins your favourite animal?’ ‘Where do you sleep in Antarctica?’ ‘Why did the seal want to eat you?’ Pupils will be following up the talk looking at how penguins are adapted to living in such a harsh environment and by completing an Antarctica quiz about what they learnt!
Thank you to the Year 5 pupils for making David feel so welcome and to David for making the trip down from Scotland. Until next year……..Katie Seecharan
