Girls’ Sport 8.11.24

It was great to be back to playing hockey after a restful half term break and the girls were keen to get going again.

The seniors played a block fixture against St Ronan’s whilst the junior girls had their last inter-school matches of the season against The Mead.

1st Team Hockey

On Wednesday the 1st Team girls travelled to Marden for a tough away fixture against St. Ronan’s. The game was a closely-fought contest, with both teams creating early threats, but it was St. Ronan’s who first broke the deadlock following two unfortunate deflections from a short corner. Another short corner at the beginning of the second half saw the ball deflected into the top corner and Holmewood were down 2-0, but a change in structure saw them creating much more in attack and they soon made their way onto the scoresheet thanks to a superb through ball from Rosie and the usual excellent finishing by Saoirse. Francesca then scythed through the home defence to make it back-to-back goals and tie the game up at 2-2. The game was an end-to-end affair after this with both teams creating opportunities and Holmewood narrowly hanging on after two more penalty corners, but in the final seconds they earned on of their own and a good strike from Francesca was deflected off a defender’s stick over the head of the goalkeeper to snatch victory from the home side and leave Holmewood 3-2 to the good. A superb second-half performance from the Holmewood girls and a fabulous game of hockey for any neutral observers. Player of the game was Francesca. DB

2nd Team Hockey

The team displayed their very best hockey drawing 1-1 with strong St Ronans team. Our girls had many chances, attacking the goal with all their might, but we were kept out! We went into the first half a goal down. Piling on the pressure in the second half, it eventually payed off with a great goal! A great team performance girls, well done! DG

3rd Team Hockey

The 3rd team took a trip to Marden hockey club to face St Ronans. In a fiercely competitive game, we controlled the first half scoring 2 well worked goals. The second half saw us take our foot off the pedal, inviting a lot of pressure and allowing the opposition to score. The game ended 2-2, with strong performances all round. Well done girls! DG

4th Team Hockey

What a great game for these girls, they are an absolute delight to coach and always give 110% effort. They got the ball wide beautifully and kept attacking down the wings with the rest of the team making sure they were then getting themselves in the right positions by the goal for the pass into the D. We scored 4 great goals and were dominant throughout the pitch which was helped by making quick decisions. Huge well done to them all. TB

U11A Hockey

Following our match against a very strong St Ronan’s at the IAPS earlier this term, the girls knew it would be a battle and that we would have to pull out all of the stops against them. Well, the girls

really lived up to that expectation and fought incredibly hard to stop St Ronan’s play. The opposition scored a couple of soft goals early into the match, but as time went on our play improved and we really restricted their opportunities and had some great moments of attacking play. Although 3-0 down at half time, the girls held their heads high and were determined and positive at the start of the second half. We continued to battle and the play was more even. A mistake in defence gave them another goal, but Pippa made some fantastic saves throughout the match and we had chances, but just couldn’t convert them. It was a fantastic team effort with real passion and much improved from earlier in the term. Millie was nominated as girl of the game. Very well done girls as we look ahead to playing Hazelwood next week. SP

U11B Hockey

St Ronans arrived and Captain Eleanor won the push back. We were slightly caught off guard and allowed the opposition to score early. However, the girls reset and worked incredibly hard particularly in defence. Ottilie and Charlotte put up a strong barrier and Maya made some spectacular saves. 3 0 down at half time. We saved our best hockey for the second half. Right from the back – great choice and strength in our passing. Superb ball control at top speed, good vision and positioning and excellent shots right to the post where Nilaya scored twice. A real delight to see such improvement and now scoring well deserved goals. Again the team never took the foot off the pedal. Well done to Maya, Charlotte, Ottilie, Eleanor, Amaia, Zoe and POM Nilaya. SE

U11C Hockey

The play between St Ronan’s and Holmewood was very well matched throughout the game, with both teams having lots of chances. The difference was the clearance from defence, which we need to work on in training this week. Rebecca made lots of great saves as goalie and was nominated as girl of the game by the opposition. Pippa stepped in to play on field having been goalie for the A team all term, and was very strong in the midfield. She played some good hockey with Ffion, Bella and Cassie who supported her in midfield. Juwan and Ayla tried in defence, but just needed to be quicker and stronger in their clearances. A tough match, but some good play, well done girls! SP

U10A Hockey

The U10 teams travelled to St Ronan’s this week and the B and C teams played first. The C team had a tough match, but all worked hard the entire match as they had no subs. Hannah cleared the ball in defence, out to the wings really well. Olivia and Anna were tenacious, running into tackles up and down the pitch. Florence and Fleur, held their positions really well and drove the ball down to our D. Cherice had a cracking shot at goal but she was just outside the D.

The B team got better and better as the game went on. The St Ronan’s pitch was short and wide, and they managed to score 3 goals in the first half. Emilia and Flora clearing the ball wide from defence and Ellie holding position up front, we just got stuck in the middle with over crowding. Pulling back though, with some brilliant passages of play down from Fi in defence, to Isla on the wing and across to Tavonga, we scored 2 goals and the games was getting exciting! Both teams really pushing hard in the remaining minutes and some fantastic defending from Marsaili, Sofia and Anna, the St Ronan’s managed to sneak a final goal in. It was a great match to watch and all girls worked until the final whistle.

The A team finished up the days matches, playing the best the girls have played all season and the end result not reflecting the game play. Rebecca in goal, saved 4 goals from their strong attackers. Temi and Alice worked relentlessly together pushing the ball up the pitch. Bea at centre mid appeared to be everywhere on the pitch, making tackles, backing up and feeding the ball up. Ella, Amelie, Darcie and Myra also worked brilliantly, positioning in the right places, trying to keep possession and running off the ball when needed. KB

U9 Hockey

What a great finish to the hockey season for the U9 girls. They have all worked so hard and are really starting to play a game that resembles hockey. The A team played on a big pitch and they used the space beautifully, trying hard to send the ball out wide and creating fantastic space for each other. The girls all played all the positions on the pitch and there were goals galore. The B team played most of the game with 1 less player than the opposition however each and every one of them were working so hard you certainly wouldn’t have known. The girls all moved around positions, defended brilliantly and scored some great goals. The C team had a tough game and found it difficult to get the ball out into the space, they did however work exceptionally hard even though they were also a player short for most of the game. Interhouse next Thursday before moving on to netball. TB

U8 Hockey

As we come to the end of the season, it is evident that the girls have made so much progress. They played brilliantly in all their matches against The Mead, scoring lots of goals and being the better team. The pitches were very big with lots of space and so there was some great dribbling and passing. All in all a fantastic season and well done girls. We look forward to a fun afternoon of house hockey next week, and then on to play some netball.
