Success of Holmewood House Young Pianists at the Around the Globe Online Piano Competition

Annual event ‘Around the Globe Piano Music Festival’ was this year presented as an Online Piano Competition on 22nd and 29th November. Contestants have been challenged this year to make recordings of their performances that were displayed on the Zoom online platform along with the Adjudicator’s live comments and the presentation of awards. Organisers were inspired by the large number of entries for the Junior Piano Categories with participants from different parts of the UK, other parts of Europe including Poland, Germany and Serbia as well as faraway country as Singapore.

A number of pupils from Holmewood House took this opportunity to master their repertoire and perform among other talented pianists from around the globe. Although standard has been very high, several awards were won by our pupils.

Winners of the World Contemporary Music classes were awarded to Marie Frydenbo-Bruvoll for Western composers and Bob Zheming Zhu for Asian composers class. Bob has been also awarded Around the Globe Medal together with Brittens Music Voucher for the best performance at Contemporary classes in addition to winning Grade repertoire class for his age group. Uzezi Esalomi was the winner of the Jazz Class receiving a Special prize by guitarist/composer Branco Stoysin as well as distinction for her performance at Recital class.

Amongst the younger performers were Elena Mulley and Phoebe Leadbeater (year 4) receiving distinctions in Grade Repertoire Classes. Year 6 pupil Yuki Jiayu Zhu was highly praised for her performance of the more advanced grade 6 repertoire. In addition, Nia Pang and Alexander Leadbeater received compliments with distinction mark for their performances of Sibelius, Chopin and Brubeck.

Huge BRAVO to all performers not only for their high level of achievements, but also for the effort they have put into a new skill of recording their own playing. Opportunity to record performance many times raises a different challenge. We are all naturally aiming for a ‘perfect shot’, not an easy task to achieve. Apart from the challenge that online competition brought to our performers, organisers are relived that their skills of dealing with modern technology have improved too and Around the Globe Online Competition proved to be a great success.
