Sport has a high profile at Holmewood House and is well known for its many successes and the excellent manner in which it is played. The PE, Games and Activities programme offer all students opportunities to participate, compete and perform in a wide variety of Sports delivered by the highly qualified PE staff, coaches and fully committed academic staff. Enjoyment, fun and fair play are given the prominence they deserve.
Holmewood House has excellent sporting facilities including a sports hall, a ‘tiger turf’ all weather pitch, with athletics track, a superb 25m indoor heated swimming pool, indoor cricket nets, a rifle range, three squash courts and six tennis courts.
In the autumn and spring terms, we have four soccer pitches, four rugby pitches, four netball courts and a grass hockey pitch. In the summer term, we have three cricket squares, six cricket nets and four rounders pitches.
All pupils up to Year 8 have a PE lesson each week, delivered in the Prep School by the PE staff and the curriculum is based along National Curriculum lines. In Pre-Prep, the focus is on developing motor and coordination skills through a mixture of gymnastics and games. As pupils progress through the school the curriculum broadens to incorporate fitness, athletics and a variety of games including basketball and volleyball.
In addition to their weekly PE lesson, all pupils from Nursery to Year 5 have a weekly swimming lesson taught by the school’s swimming coaches. Years 6, 7 and 8 have swimming lessons on a rotation basis.
Holmewood House runs an extensive Games programme from Year 1 upwards. In Year 1 and 2 pupils have a weekly games session. From Year 3 upwards every pupil has two games sessions and a midweek match afternoon as well as Saturday fixtures. For the boys they play Football, Rugby, Hockey (Year 5 upwards) and Cricket whilst the Girls play Hockey, Netball and Rounders.
Fixtures are played against local schools as well as tournaments spread across the year. We are extremely proud of the aspiration and achievements of all of the teams that compete. Wherever possible, every pupil gets the opportunity to play in a fixture and represent the school on a weekly basis. Sport is very much open to all and success and effort at all levels is celebrated at Holmewood House.
Through the activities programme we also run highly successful gymnastics, shooting, Squash, athletics and cross-country teams coached by highly qualified coaches as well as girls cricket and golf run by external coaches.
