WoLLoW
This term in Year 5, we have been looking at words and where they come from. Loanwords are borrowed from another language whereas cognates share similarities between languages. This week, we have looked at “portmanteau” words. A portmanteau is a word formed by blending the sounds and meanings of two or more words, typically by combining the beginning of one with the end of another, for instance, blog, email or even Pokemon or glamping. Year 5 have then created their own words. Can you guess what the following are?
Sturger (steak burger), Chossant (chocolate croissant), Suza (sushi pizza), Dosprink (donut with sprinkles).
Who knows, some of these may catch on!
