National Poetry Day
The theme for National Poetry Day this year was ‘play’. During English lessons pupils from Year 1 to Year 8 took part in creating word association poems inspired by games or toys that they play with. The objects included a car, a dinosaur, a Furby, a badminton racquet, Lego bricks, Jenga, a Rubik’s cube, a motorbike, a starfish, a dice, a puzzle, a deepsea diver and a red London bus.
To generate poems they could play a Word Association Game and a Dice Decider Game. The games were designed to enable pupils to play with words to create poems as a personal response to the objects. They used playing cards and dice as a means of playing with words and phrases.
“Using the playing cards was fun and made it much easier than just sitting down and writing it.” Year 5 pupil.
The poems will be made into colourful posters and a selection will be on display around school.

The walking dead detailed dice walked on the monopoly board,

Activities also took place in the Learning Hub at lunch break. Pupils could read poetry and create word association and acrostic poems using paying cards and cardboard tubes! They had a lot of fun playing together with words. Catherine Duncumb
