Girls’ Sport 26.9.25

This week we had fixtures and tournaments at a variety of venues. The 1st team played their first tournament of the season at Bede’s whilst the 2nd, 3rd and 4th team had matches at Sevenoaks School. The U11 and U10 C teams played in the Coursehorn Tournaments at Dulwich College and the U11 and U10A teams travelled to Sutton Valence. A mixed afternoon in terms of results, but wonderful to have so many playing at different venues.

1st Team Hockey

The U13 girls travelled to Bede’s for their tournament and made an excellent start, beating Mayfield 3–0 with two fine finishes from Bella and another from Antonia. They followed this up with a tight 1–0 win over Claremont, thanks to a superb strike from Millie.

The next two matches proved more challenging, with a 4–0 defeat to a strong Sevenoaks side and a narrow 1–0 loss to Great Walstead, where the girls were unlucky not to find the equaliser.

In the play-offs, they first faced St Christopher’s and battled hard but were edged out 2–0. However, the team showed great spirit in their final match, defeating Claremont once again, this time 1–0, with Bella scoring the decisive goal and Tilly, Lavinia and Pippa making some superb saves at the back.

The girls finished the day in 3rd place in the plate competition – a good performance overall, but one that they will look to improve upon in their next tournament at Sevenoaks.

2nd Team Hockey

The Girls’ 2nd Team faced a very strong Sevenoaks U12A side in a tough but valuable match. From the start, the girls worked hard defensively, showing bravery in tackles and resilience under constant pressure. Midfielders battled tirelessly to disrupt play, while also creating attacking chances. A highlight came with a well-worked counterattack that ended in a deserved goal, showcasing teamwork and persistence. Despite the challenge, the girls’ spirit never dropped, with encouragement and determination evident until the final whistle. The experience provided important lessons and plenty of positives to build on as the season progresses. DG

3rd Team Hockey

Holmewood house 3rd XI girls played Sevenoaks school in their recent hockey match, the opposition showed their intent, controlling possession and applying consistent pressure throughout the match. While the score reflects a tough result, there were moments of resilience, including several key saves by the goalkeeper and some determined individual performances. The team will take this experience as a learning opportunity, with a focus on regrouping and improving in training ahead of the next match.

4th Team Hockey

The Girl’s 4th Team worked hard throughout their match against Sevenoaks but were unable to find the breakthrough. Despite determined attacking play and plenty of effort, Sevenoaks’ defence held firm and proved difficult to break down and Sevenoaks took their opportunity to edge the game in the second half to 1-0. The girls can be proud of their persistence against a tough opponent. KL

Under 11A Team

The Under 11A team travelled to Sutton Valence and had a great game of hockey. With the team settling into their positions and having the space to play a full game, they proved skilful and strong going forward. Constantly on the attack and with numerous short corners they struggled to score for 3/4 of the match. In the final quarter however, the goals started to go in with the first being scored by Bea, the next by Ella and finally a third from Amelie. There was some great passing to take the ball from left to right of the pitch and Temi who was girl of the game, really started to gain in confidence taking the ball at pace down the right. Darcie kept her position on the left and was strong on the ball whilst Myra played mostly on the right and had excellent skills to outwit her opponent. Alice was positive in her play sending the ball nice and wide but Matilda as goalie didn’t have much to do in this match, which was good for the result, but not the most action packed for her this week.

Very well done girls and we look forward to playing Ardingly away next week!! SP

U10A Hockey

The U10A team delivered a dominant performance against Sutton Valence, securing a convincing 6–0 victory. The girls showed excellent discipline in maintaining their positions and making full use of the pitch’s width, which created numerous attacking opportunities. With no substitutes available, all seven players showed impressive stamina and determination, working tirelessly from start to finish. The team also made effective use of the reset, allowing for clearer decision-making and smoother transitions throughout the match. POM was awarded to Cecilia W. KB

U10 and U11 Coursehorn Tournament

On Wednesday 16 girls were invited to play in the Coursehorn Hockey Tournament at Dulwich Cranbrook. The girls played 4 nine minute games, which meant strong attacking hockey from the start, keeping possession and powerful hits at goal. The results as follows:

U11C v Dulwich 0 0

v Derwent lodge 0 0

v Sutton Valence lost 1 0

v Ashford won 1 0 ( goal scorer Tavonga )

This team of 9 worked hard all afternoon rotating as necessary and showed real determination leaving their best hockey till last – a great passage of play involving everyone from Hannah in defence right through to Sofia who crossed the ball for Tavonga to score. MVP of the tournament Anne P and Annabelle as goalkeeper.

U10C v Derwent Lodge 0 0

v Sutton Valence 0 0

v Dulwich won 1 0

v MHV lost 1 0

This team worked hard and were rewarded with two clean sheets at the start, with good defending from Bonnie in goal and Sophie. There were plenty of attempts at goal with Zara and Tomiwa narrowly missing by a whisker. A great game against Dulwich saw a fine finish from Scarlett after strong play from Nova and Sofia. The last game was very close with MHV just clinching the win in the last minute.

MVP of the tournament Scarlett. SE

U10 Girls at The Coursehorn Tournament

U9 Hockey

Our U9s travelled to Hazelwood for a triangular fixture, competing alongside Hawthorns. Across our three teams, we recorded 2 wins, 3 draws, and 1 loss — a strong set of results reflecting the hard work and development of all our players.

There was noticeable progress across the board, with everyone showing great teamwork and determination. Special mentions go to Benny, Skylar, Iona, Connie, India, and Emi for their outstanding effort and consistently positive attitude throughout the day.

Well done to all involved!

U8 Hockey

We had another great afternoon of hockey here at Holmewood against Hazelwood. The girls were more competitive and hungry to score goals which was great, and all of the teams scored lots of goals. Positioning improved as the play went on and there was more awareness of space on the wings. Well done to all of the girls and we look forward to more matches next week against Kent College. SP
