Year 2

Science

As part of our recent science unit on living things and their habitats, we embarked on a ‘hot’ walk down to the pond to observe the local wildlife. We discussed how fortunate we are to have three distinct habitats right on our doorstep: pond, woodland, and urban environments.
While exploring, we learned how to identify animals and plants by determining whether they are alive, dead, or objects that have never been alive. To help us classify and sort these findings, we used the MRS GREN criteria, which stands for Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, and Nutrition.

Year 2 Team

Year 2 had a fantastic time exploring the world of weight through five fun-filled, hands-on activities! First, they searched for classroom items weighing more or less than 1kg.  Starting with clever estimates and then checking using real scales. Next, they estimated and ordered five different objects by weight, before testing their ideas and recording their results using <, > or = symbols. In another station, they read different types of scales and decided whether to measure in grams or kilograms. Then came the great box challenge comparing items of the same size but different weights to see if their estimates matched reality. Finally, the young mathematicians tackled a tricky problem-solving activity, working out combinations of weights to total exactly 100kg. It was an action-packed session full of teamwork, thinking, and weighing wonders!
