Year 8

Sponsored Walk Around Bewl Water

The year 8’s embarked on the mammoth 13 mile walk around Bewl Water as part of their Porchlight Charity Day. Homeless people often have to walk this same distance everyday before setting down for the night so combining the evening sleep out, the children got a brief insight into the challenges that some unfortunate people have when it comes to homelessness.

The children rose to the challenge and persevered to complete the challenge in what was described by some of the teachers as the fastest time that they could remember. There were some great conversations had by all and I particularly enjoyed the hour-long conversation with Maddy, Darcie and Ava Lily on the different rules and versions of Uno!

Most importantly the whole day has so far raised over £1000 for the Porchlight charity, and it would be great to continue some fundraising in hindsight of the achievement of the children. Well done to all the children and thanks to Mr Bennett, Ms Betts, Mr Crombie and Mr Steele for assisting in the day. Simon Jervis

Brecon Beacons Leavers’ Trip

Year 8 returned safely from their 5-day Camp in the Brecon Beacons. They spent their action-packed days climbing, hiking, horse-riding, caving and abseiling, among a whole host of other activities that allowed them to explore the amazing environment and experience all that the centre has to offer.
The pupils had an incredible time, trying new things and spending lots of time enjoying the friendships they have built over the last two years at Holmewood. We are really proud of the way they approached the whole week; they got stuck in to every activity and they represented the school brilliantly. We hope they will look back on the trip with fond memories for a long time to come. Dave Bennett

Parent Picnic

The Year 8 parent picnic was a great success, with parents enjoying a feast prepared by their children. Delicious sandwiches, scones and cakes were shared on the South Lawn during a lovely sunny morning. A memorable occasion as the Year 8s enjoy their penultimate week at school.

One Day Film School

As part of their leavers’ programme, our Year 8 pupils spent the day immersed in the world of filmmaking. In the morning, they learned the essentials: Film History, Fight Choreography, Screenwriting, Camera and Editing.

Then it was time for the 10 Shot Challenge where pupils worked in small teams to create silent (with music) films of up to 2 minutes based on a classic narrative.

Each film premiered at the end of the day and competed for three “Oscars”.

And the winners were:
Best Motion Picture: ” The Broken Love”
Best Performance: Harriet, “Blood Behind the Mask”
Best Technical Achievement: Our Last Breath”

The winning film is now eligible for the 10 Shot Film Awards, a national celebration of filmmaking excellence across 125+ leading UK schools, judged by a panel led by Robin Kinsey, Vice President Marketing at The Walt Disney Studios EMEA & UK – Marvel, Lucasfilm & 20th Century Studios.
