Year 7 Carnegies Book Group

The focus for this week was ‘Letters in Charcoal’ by Colombian author Irene Vasco and Mexican illustrator, Juan Palomino. The aim of the book is to share the transformative power of being literate. The context for the story is a village where letters are everywhere; on newspaper, packaging but few people can read them. That is until the desire to find out the content of a series of letters received by her sister, inspires a young girl to learn to read.

The challenge set this week was to firstly think of a word that describes what reading means to you. Pupils then had to find and photograph all the letters needed to spell their word on book covers found in the library. They then used the app Procreate to collage them together to create their word.

Year 6 Enrichment

Year 6 have been reading ‘Hector’ by Adrienne Wright. The book maps the events leading up to the shooting of 13 year old Hector Pieterson during the Soweto uprising on June 16, 1976, captured in the iconic photograph taken by photojournalist Sam Nzima which when shared internationally via ‘The World’ newspaper was pivotal in the movement to end apartheid in South Africa. This week they considered some of the other people involved in the events of that day and what might have happened to them. They created storyboards then acted out their ideas. Finally we all agreed that one photograph can change the world.

Reading for Pleasure

It’s been wonderful to see so many people reading for pleasure during their breaktimes.
