The Learning Hub

Chinese New Year

A lot of fun was had celebrating Chinese New Year on Wednesday in the Learning Hub. Leon created a quiz for Year 3 and 4. Pupils could also take part in Sean’s really informative quiz about Chinese New Year traditions. Those up for competition took part in the Chopstick Challenge where they had to pick up as many mini plastic horses before the salt ran out – this was much harder than it looked! Anna demonstrated her calligraphy skills and it was possible to have a go using real Chinese brushes and paper (with water rather then ink). Aaron did a great job of hiding red paper cut horses around the room to find, and those in a crafty mood could make horses and also decorate lucky red envelopes and money to put inside. Thank you to everyone who helped and everyone who took part!

National Storytelling Week Creative Writing Challenge

Congratulations to Artemis and Senan, winners of the Prep school Creative Writing Challenge, part of National Storytelling Week. They were asked to write a piece of creative writing inspired by one of two images; a boat stranded on a beach or a spooky castle at nighttime. For their story they needed to include creative and imaginative references to different sounds that might be heard, rhythm and music, to tie in with the theme for National Storytelling Week ‘soundtrack your life’. The prizes were awarded for their creative and imaginative writing and use of language. Here are some lovely excerpts from their stories. In addition, a Special Commendation was awarded to Willow in Pre-Prep who submitted a story.

“My new and strict dad who sounds like a sewer when he speaks.”
“The orange dry leaves crunch under my feet.”
By Senan

“The waves crashed and the sand made a whooshing noise and the dogs barked loudly.”
“When she unfolded her [deck]chair it made a clicking and clacking noise.”
By Artemis

“Her heart was pounding so worriedly she could nearly hear it boom in her chest.”
“With a heavy sign she started to drift off in time to the rhythmic ticking of her clock.”
By Willow
