Year 2

Science

In Science this week, we have begun our exciting new topic, Plants and Living Things (Including Humans). The children explored a variety of different seeds, carefully observing and discussing their similarities and differences. They particularly enjoyed dissecting an edamame seed, where they were able to look closely at what is hidden inside. Through this hands-on investigation, the children learned about the different parts of a seed, including the seed coat, embryo, roots, leaves and food store, helping to build a strong foundation for our learning about how plants grow.

English

In English, we have begun studying the books of author and illustrator Anthony Browne. The children used iPads and information leaflets to research facts about the author and learn more about his work. We compared common themes across his books and spent time discussing the illustrations, sharing which pictures we liked and why with a partner. The children then used expanded noun phrases and prepositional phrases to describe images from the stories, developing their descriptive writing skills.

Maths

In Maths this week, the children have used their knowledge of the 2 times table to calculate halves and doubles. They have investigated odd and even numbers, using detective skills to spot and explain patterns. The children have also learnt and practised the 10 and 5 times tables, applying their understanding of inverse operations to solve division problems.

Art

This week, we explored the wonderful world of “Shades of Green.” We discovered that green is a secondary colour and learned how it is created by mixing blue and yellow. The children enjoyed experimenting with different amounts of each colour to create their own unique shades of green, designing beautiful green colour wheels.

We then developed our drawing skills by learning how to sketch different types of leaves, carefully observing their shapes and details. Using these techniques, the children created their own detailed leaf drawings. It has been a fantastic start to our Nature topic, and we are excited to see where our creativity takes us next!
