Miss Price’s Year 6 English group have written these powerful poems in the style of Carol Ann Duffy’s ‘Valentine’.
Excitement is like a cloud,
It has a fluffy appearance but not always soft,
It thunders around you, electricity frying below.
It stops you having droughts,
It empties its bucket on the earth’s floor.
Excitement is like a cloud,
It looks soft but you fall through the experience.
The exhilaration lasts but it always comes to an end,
It creates raging storms and rains on you until you drown.

Life is like a pen,
It has no rubber so you can’t reverse your steps,
It lets you draw your own route.
Life is like a pen,
It can come in different colours like your emotions,
It makes you feel as though you have control
Whilst others make the page smaller.

Anger is like a crane,
It has a door to a cosy cabin,
It lets you in when you feel calm,
It stops you from losing control.
Anger is like a crane,
It has a wrecking ball and can destroy,
It makes you feel like you don’t belong here,
Whilst one pull of a lever can stop it.

Death is like a broom,
It can sweep you away when you are not ready.
They say it has a handle, but it is impossible to control.
It can also push you aside.
Death is like a broom,
It takes you away with no remorse,
It makes you feel like you are unsafe and need to do more,
Whilst the one who swept you away will always be the same.
Death is like a broom,
It can be changed but the end is the same.
The technique can be different
But its remorse will never bend.
