Year 6

Fruity Circuits

This term, Year 6 pupils have been exploring physical computing and learning how software and hardware work together. They have been using the BBC Micro:bit to investigate inputs and outputs, as well as how the device can detect and complete a circuit. By applying conditional statements within their coding, pupils used the Micro:bit alongside themselves and a selection of ‘fruit’ to create simple electrical circuits. When a circuit was completed, the Micro:bit responded by playing a single note or displaying an icon on its LED display. Pupils then developed their learning further by expanding their circuits to include more of their classmates and additional fruit, demonstrating creativity, collaboration and a growing understanding of how computing can interact with the physical world. This Thursday, a group of nine Year 6 pupils took part in an exciting Gothic Writing Day at Bede’s Senior School. They joined pupils from Skippers Hill and Bede’s Junior School and were treated to four brilliant workshops, in which they wrote some creepy poetry and prose and took part in immersive theatre activities. I was really proud of all of our pupils, who did Holmewood House proud with their enthusiasm for learning and their willingness to throw themselves into every activity. Special mentions went to Ellie, Tavonga and Olivia, who won prizes for their efforts during the day. Thank you so much to Bede’s for hosting such an engaging afternoon. Below is the stimulus the children were given, The Nightmare by Henry Fuseli. Alexandra Price

The clock strikes midnight by Anna Mendoza

My heart grew cold for I knew their stalking glare.
Staring into me, I was trapped in their lair.
My blood escaped for I lay there cold.
The pressure of the goblin, shrunken and old.
I knew my life might be coming to an end.
Was it too late to escape again?
I lay there half breathing, choking myself
Watched By the evil Hawk perched on the shelf.
I felt the cold air rush past me.
The ghost was about, floating by the key.
The sting had come at last; my sight went black.
Life gone so fast or has it gone yet, was I dead?
Stabbing at my heart the feeling of threat
I lay cold and frozen to the ancient bed
My dress filled with blood stains that was my fate.
I was too late…
