Year 2 23.1.26

After reading the story Whatever Next!, the children used props and their imaginations to create their own exciting versions of the story. We saw boats full of pirates searching for hidden treasure, buses travelling to campsites with pet dogs along for the adventure, and royal carriages carrying princes and princesses on daring journeys. In one story, a brave princess rescued a prince from a tower guarded by an evil dragon! After acting out their ideas, the children planned their stories and finally wrote some amazing, creative pieces of writing. It was wonderful to see their confidence, teamwork and storytelling skills grow throughout the process.  Year 2 Team

This week in Art and ICT, Year 2 have been learning about the Dutch artist Piet Mondrian. We explored his abstract style and how he used primary colours and straight lines. In ICT, the children worked hard on developing their mouse control, using PurpleMash to carefully draw lines and create their own Mondrian-inspired artwork. Year 2 Team

In Maths this week, we have continued our work on money. The children have added different amounts of money, explored the many ways to make one pound, and calculated change. They then combined all of these skills to solve two‑step problems. We have used ‘real’ coins and base ten resources to support our calculations and to help the children make strong links between money and the real world.
In Topic this week, we have enjoyed sharing our family trees and learning more about the daily lives of the children’s great‑grandparents, grandparents, and parents. We sorted pictures of household items from different periods, listened to diary extracts from each generation, and then linked this learning back to the children’s own families by drawing pictures of family members.
