Year 5 Computing ‘Battleships’ in Excel

This term, Year 5 have been introduced to spreadsheets, developing their understanding of how data is organised into rows and columns. They have begun exploring some of Excel’s more powerful features, including the AutoFill (fill down) tool, which they used to efficiently complete sequences such as days of the week, months of the year and multiplication patterns. Pupils also learned that every cell has a unique address, a key concept that will support their future work with formulas. To bring cell addressing to life, the class tested their knowledge by playing a game of Battleships, using cell references to locate their partner’s hidden fleet. There was plenty of excitement and friendly competition as pupils tried to outmanoeuvre one another and claim victory! Peter Meier
