Boys’ Sport

U13A vs  Vinehall School

The first game of the season finally arrived eagerly anticipated by all involved. It was so encouraging to see so many boys who were so keen to be involved in this first game. In total 21 boys were involved and it was pleasing to note that everyone looked comfortable to be involved in the game.
The game itself started strongly for HH and they scored a great team try which involved multiple passes and phases for a great team effort. With the game split into 4 x 10 minute slots it proved to be a perfect opportunity to give all the boys great game time. Ethan, Louis and Joel all made the step up in age group and all did exceptionally well. The pleasing thing about the game was how well we passed the ball and did not rely on a few players to score our trys. It is testament to how effective we were at this by the number of touches that the wingers got on the ball. Jonathon and William were also making their school rugby debuts and showed they are capable of making some very good contributions. Being one of the smallest players on the field did not prevent Tom from tackling one of their biggest players. His tackle technique should be noted by everyone as a model for everyone to copy. The game ended with a thrilling 7 – 7 draw as HH managed to close the 2 try gap in the final quarter. Well done everyone.

U12A vs  Marlborough House Vinehall

The U12As kicked off their rugby season with an excellent display against Marlborough House Vinehall, securing a confident 25–10 victory in their first game of the season.
From the opening whistle, Holmewood showed great intent and physicality, dominating the breakdowns and maintaining strong defensive structure. The boys’ tackling and commitment at the ruck set the tone, ensuring they were able to control possession and build sustained pressure.
By half-time, Holmewood had established a well-deserved 15–5 lead, built on smart running lines, quick support play, and some powerful carries through the middle. The second half saw the team continue their dominance, using their physical advantage to great effect and keeping Marlborough House Vinehall pinned in their own half for long periods.
There were many strong performances across the team, but two players particularly stood out:
  • Man of the Match – Samuel, for his outstanding physicality in the rucks and relentless work rate around the pitch.
  • Players’ Man of the Match – Louis, for his excellent leadership as captain, tactical awareness, and calm decision-making throughout the game.
Overall, it was a hugely encouraging start to the season. The boys should be proud of the effort, teamwork, and determination they showed — a fantastic platform to build on for the matches ahead.

U11A vs  Marlborough House Vinehall

On a glorious afternoon, the U11A team took part in a triangular fixture against MHV and Ashford Prep. The boys arrived full of confidence after an outstanding Monday training session in atrocious weather — a session where they showed real grit and commitment, which set them up perfectly for the matches ahead.
Holmewood opened against MHV and produced an excellent display of running rugby, securing a dominant 15–0 victory. The handling was sharp, the defence organised, and the support play outstanding throughout. The second match against Ashford was a much more physical battle, but the boys rose to the challenge brilliantly. Strong tackling, quick rucking and clever support lines allowed Holmewood to break through repeatedly, earning a well-deserved 15–5 win.
Across both games, every player contributed, and the team demonstrated superb skill, teamwork, and determination. It was a very pleasing start to the season — two hard-fought matches and two impressive victories. Well played, boys!

U10A vs Marlborough House Vinehall

The U10A team took part in their first triangular of the season, facing Ashford Prep in the opening match before taking on Marlborough House Vinehall in the second.

The first game was a very physical contest, with Ashford’s strong runners testing our defence repeatedly. The boys handled the pressure superbly, securing the ball well at the ruck and showing real composure under contact. A solid defensive line and excellent work at the breakdown allowed Holmewood to control key moments. Theo W, Charlie J and George helped maintain momentum by repeatedly crashing through Ashford’s defensive line, contributing to three well-taken tries and ensuring we kept a clean sheet.

The second match against MHV was a more open affair, with both teams playing fast, attacking rugby. Our opponents put pressure on the back line, but Holmewood responded brilliantly, turning over possession near our try line and counterattacking with real purpose. The boys ran in four excellent tries (Teddy M scoring two) through sharp support play and strong running in open space — a fantastic first outing for the U10As and a performance full of promise for the season ahead.

U8 Rugby Festival

The U8s travelled to Great Walstead for their first rugby festival of the season, joining Great Walstead, Brighton College, Cumnor House and Handcross Park in a highly enjoyable afternoon of rugby. With mixed-ability teams selected for the occasion, the boys embraced the challenge brilliantly and settled quickly into match play.

From the opening whistle, Holmewood showed great intent — running confidently with the ball in hand, linking play with some impressive passing, and providing excellent support even after long breakaway runs. Their tagging was fearless, and as the festival progressed, the boys demonstrated clear improvements in their defensive organisation and communication.

Throughout the afternoon, the team displayed resilience, teamwork and a fantastic attitude, learning from each game and growing in confidence. It was a highly competitive festival, and the boys gained so much from the experience. A fantastic way to start the season — well done, U8s!
