National Poetry Day

The theme for National Poetry Day this year was ‘play’. During English lessons pupils from Year 1 to Year 8 took part in creating word association poems inspired by games or toys that they play with. The objects included a car, a dinosaur, a Furby, a badminton racquet, Lego bricks, Jenga, a Rubik’s cube, a motorbike, a starfish, a dice, a puzzle, a deepsea diver and a red London bus.

To generate poems they could play a Word Association Game and a Dice Decider Game. The games were designed to enable pupils to play with words to create poems as a personal response to the objects. They used playing cards and dice as a means of playing with words and phrases.

“Using the playing cards was fun and made it much easier than just sitting down and writing it.” Year 5 pupil.

The poems will be made into colourful posters and a selection will be on display around school.

Brilliant bricks
Fun then….clatter crash
Click-clack makes a huge monster
Piece of exciting castle
Creativity is the amazing element of Lego
Fun until…. a meteor strike!
Entertainment from 0-99
Hard to make great builds
Bricks making a smash
Build and make a scattered dress
Use your imagination
Circle connecting now and then
Ouch!
Make a mansion today, a bank tomorrow
Everyday bricks are fantastic
Anything is possible!

A dangerous daring diplodocus in a mini dinosaur world.
A quiet roar giving the loudest noise.
As scary as a killer whale in the bath.
As nice as the sun giving light.

The minute multi-numbered mice like dice, sat on the shelf,
The dice was like the future, unlimited chances,
The walking dead detailed dice walked on the monopoly board,
The black dots seemed to dance on the dice
Tip – toe-tip, the small dice meandered,
The white was a strong man, holding the planets of dots.

Flashy, fast and fearless,
The endless fun was an infinite loop
As colourful as a chameleon,
Faster than the speed of light.
Screaming wheels when it flies past,
The timeless toy races on forever.

Its eyes were a ferocious storm,
It uttered a minute pant,
Abley agile. Loose limbs.
It was camouflaged in plain sight,
As small as an ant,
It speaks a cunning tongue.

Rocking horse
As nostalgic as childhood,
A valiant steed.
As if possessed by a thousand demons
Rocking readily into raging battle,
Staring at me from the untouched crevices in my room: unseen, unheard, just peacefully swaying.

Activities also took place in the Learning Hub at lunch break. Pupils could read poetry and create word association and acrostic poems using paying cards and cardboard tubes! They had a lot of fun playing together with words. Catherine Duncumb
