Author Visit

Yesr 7 and 8 enjoyed a visit from award-winning author Nathanael Lessore this week. Following a talk in the theatre they were able to meet the author at a book signing session.

Nathanael’s novel Steady For This was shortlisted for the Carnegie Award, the Jhalak Prize, and won the Branford Boase Award 2024, as well as many regional awards. His follow up, King of Nothing, won the Waterstones Prize 2025, the Shadowers’ Choice Carnegie Medal for Writing 2025 and the Jhalek Children’s and Young Adult Prize 2025.

Writing his first book gave him the opportunity to show his South East London childhood as the funny, warm, adventurous world that wasn’t always represented as such. Celebrating diverse characters has given Nathanael the opportunity to represent kids who otherwise would never see themselves in this light in this form of literature.

In his talk he shared his personal tips and techniques for creative writing. He enlightened pupils on the wide range of opportunities in industry for writers such as sport journalism, music videos, television, song writing, gaming, and blogs. He promoted the importance of reading despite having been a reluctant reader himself – he has since made up for lost time! He shared some funny anecdotes that became source material for his books, these included getting stuck in a child’s pushchair and cockroaches! A memorable visit from an inspiring young writer. Today we celebrated Roald Dahl Day. The activities focused on Roald Dahl’s sources of inspiration and his creativity.

Around the school, pupils had a lot of fun trying to find ten golden tickets hidden on staff lanyards and answering questions based on Roald Dahl’s books.

In the Learning Hub they were invited to view a pop-up mini museum based on Roald Dahl’s writing hut. Roald Dahl’s writing hut was his workspace for over 30 years. It is full of curious objects, furnishings and tools, to help him feel comfortable and inspired, so he could write. Pupils were able to create an inspiring den of their own and to consider what objects they would include.

In addition, they could also make up their own gobblefunk words. Gobblefunk is the name Roald Dahl gave to the invented language he used in his books. He created over 500 words! He blended existing words and new words to create playful, imaginative and expressive ways to tell his stories.

It was really inspiring to see how creative everyone was!

Summer Reading Challenge

This week we celebrated all the pupils who took part in the Summer Reading Challenge. An astonishing 350 books were read and reviews written, either on the Library WebApp or on paper (these will be made accessible to all readers in the Learning Hub Library). Congratulations to everyone! The range of books was really inspiring and the quality of reviews very impressive. A special shout out to Austin in Year 1 who completed seven books! Everyone eligible enjoyed keyrings, cake at break, café vouchers and lots of house points! The top scorers (and quality writers) Finn, Charlie, William, Leo, Zoe and Divit received their pin badges in assembly.

Well done everyone – your efforts were fantastic and have really helped contribute to the library resources. A big thank you from Mrs Duncumb!
