Year 7 Carnegies Book Group

As an extra special session the Carnegie book group watched the livestream award ceremony for the Carnegie Medal for Illustration and Writing that took place on Thursday at the Cambridge Theatre in London. The ceremony, hosted by CILIP, celebrated both reading, book creators and readers “without readers a story is only half told.” The winner of the Judges’ Medal for Illustration was one of the books we studied called ‘Clever Crow’ and the winner of the Shadower’s Medal for Writing was Nathanael Lessore who will be visiting Homewood House to speak to Year 7 and 8 in September!

When asked what they have enjoyed about the Carnegie book group pupils said they have now realised that writing and illustrating comes from the heart and is not just a job to get done. They hadn’t appreciated how much work goes into creating books; one of the illustrators made eighty drawings of one character before they decided on what it would look like! They also said they now realise illustrated books are not just for young readers but for everyone to enjoy.

“Keep reading, keep asking questions, keep imagining.” CILIP “Reading nurtures curiosity and confidence.” Joseph Coelho (Children’s Laureate 2022-24)
