On 17 June, a group of Year 6 pupils was invited to Mayfield School for a day of Science challenges. The topic was forensics. Team Holmewood had to solve a case by analysing fingerprints and handwriting, blood testing, chromatography of ink and flame testing. Four Year 6 pupils set off to Worth for their annual inter-schools maths challenge. The team tackled five different challenges throughout the day, testing both their mathematical knowledge and collaborative skills.
One highlight was the shuttle round, where the team split into pairs. Pair 2 could only begin their question after Pair 1 had solved theirs and passed on the answer—making accuracy and communication essential.
The pupils worked exceptionally hard throughout the day and quickly learned the importance of reading questions carefully and double-checking answers as a team. Their efforts paid off with a well-deserved 2nd place—just 5 marks behind the winners, out of a possible 284!  Clare Bennett
🎨 Art meets Forest School 🌿
In Art, Year 3 have been making ceramic candle holders. Starting with slab-rolled terracotta with press-moulded and stamped details, their holders went in the kiln for the first bisque-firing. Pupils then applied two coats of the brush-on glazes before the second glaze firing.
This week, their holders came to life in Forest School as the children added the wick and poured in beeswax melted over the fire. It was a calming, focused activity set in the peace of the outdoors, and a wonderful chance for the children to see their patience and effort rewarded as their project finally came together. We think the finished candles look brilliant.

Yes, it’s official. After 37 years at Holmewood, Mrs Porritt, Director of Sport, is retiring.
And what a great way to spend her penultimate week - overseeing the annual girls’ football tournament that she started four years ago. Along with her follow coaches at Rose Hill and Somerhill, Mrs Porritt wanted to give every girl from Years 3-6 the chance to play in an end of season tournament. This year approximately 900 girls from local prep schools played over the two days at the three venues which is incredible.
It was wonderful to see all the girls playing some great football on some perfect Holmewood pitches. Many thanks to the staff from the other hosting schools, to the visiting schools, and to the amazing Mrs Porritt and the team at Holmewood for such a hugely successful couple of days.
