On international Maths day, known as Pi day (14/3 when the date is written in its American format) children in Years 5 and 6 tested their accuracy skills this week by measuring the circumferences and diameter of different circles. Dividing the circumference by the diameter led to an interesting discovery for them – they were all very similar, no matter how large or small the circle was it always seemed to be around 3, and so Pi was discovered! Yar 6 did a brilliant job learning to sign the song Happy by Pharrell Williams. To see their performance, please see Stories on Instagram!
🟰 Key Stage 1 Number Day ➗
Year 1 and 2 have had a fun Number Day exploring a variety of practical maths activities.
The children worked together to crack a secret‑code trail, experimented with different dice games, built number pyramids, and investigated the many ways numbers can be represented. They even tried a mathematical twist on “Paper Scissors Stone”.
The day offered rich opportunities for mathematical reasoning, collaboration, and was a wonderfully lively and engaging day of number-based discovery.

🔵 French Day ⚪
The learning of languages is of high importance at Holmewood, and French begins right from Pre‑Nursery with our specialist teachers. Even our youngest pupils explore not only oral and aural skills but the richness of French culture.
French Day gave Pre-Nursery to Year 4 the chance to step off the timetable and enjoy a range of interactive activities such as: a Goldilocks workshop for Years 3 and 4, a virtual trip up the Eiffel Tower, Matisse‑inspired art in Year 1, and landmark research projects in Year 2. Every lesson was infused with French, all while proudly wearing the Tricolore colours.
To finish, the whole school enjoyed pain perdu, gratin dauphinois, bourguignon, tarte au citron and Tour Eiffel biscuits. A huge thank you to the Catering Team for such a treat. 🔴

🐾 Ralph, the Cavapoo 🐾
Every evening when the front door opens, Ralph races to claim his corner spot on the common room sofa. From this throne, he supervises homework, adjudicates film debates, and offers a reassuring paw to anyone missing home.
Ralph has perfected the art of being exactly where he’s needed: beside a new boarder on their first nervous night, mysteriously appearing whenever snacks are opened, or simply flopped across someone’s feet during a phone call home with parents.
One of six dogs at Holmewood, Ralph is the only one who lives in boarding, and he has learnt from the best; equal parts comfort blanket, comedy act, and professional sofa-tester.
Give Ralph a like and vote him the People’s Choice winner in the BSA Brufts Awards!
