Do you know what ‘Schwaa’ing’ is?
It’s one of the many fascinating topics our Head of Early Years, Mrs Schweitzer, explained at her recent Early Years talk.
‘Schwaa’ing’ is the habit of adding an ‘eh’ sound after each letter when saying them aloud, like saying “meh” instead of “m”, “seh” instead of “s”, or “feh” instead of “f”. It might seem innocuous, but it can make it much harder for young children to learn their phonetic sounds correctly. A simple tip, but one that makes a big difference.
Mrs Schweitzer also shared a treasure trove of fun, practical activities parents can do at home to build their child’s fine motor skills. Think posting coins through a slit in a box, picking up tiny objects with tweezers, or getting hands stuck into kinetic sand. These small movements lay the foundation for confident pencil control later on.
If you’d like to learn more about what makes Early Years at Holmewood so special, we’d love to welcome you on one of our dedicated Early Years tours (link in bio or email admissions@holmewoodhouse.co.uk). Hear from Mrs Readman (Head of Pre-Prep), Mrs Schweitzer, and Megan Ovenden (Head of Nursery) about how they build brilliant foundations for your child`s future, as well as visiting our wonderful facilities.
