Sustainability Champions: Holmewood Retains Eco-Schools Green Flag Recognition
Our Green Council leads the way in promoting sustainability and raising environmental awareness among the school community. A particular focus this term is support for the bumblebee.
Recently, they took a tour of the grounds with our incredible gardener, Jo Humphries. She showed the children some of the amazing plants we have here, and explained how they help to support our native bumblebee populations through the winter.
The children learnt how plants such as hellebore, mahonia and elder, provide food and nesting opportunities for a variety of bees. They even saw some bumblebees foraging in our wildflower meadow in the walled garden, which provides an excellent habitat for new bumblebee queens throughout the winter, until they are ready to emerge in the warmer spring weather.
A huge thank you to Jo for taking the time to come and speak to the children and well done to our Green Council for leading the way in creating a greener future for our school and community. We look forward to hearing their plans about how Holmewood can become even more bumblebee friendly.
