Years 5 & 6
Pastoral Head of Year 5: Mr R Fretwell
Pastoral Head of Year 6: Mrs B Jervois
Year 5 is seen as a year of transition. A number of new experiences are introduced to help develop maturity and independence.
Children have experienced more independence and freedom in the Junior School (Years 3 & 4) in comparison with the Pre-Prep and we further increase this from the beginning of Year 5. Pupils move around the school for all lessons; they have specialist teachers for all subjects and must learn a greater degree of responsibility, arriving at the right lesson with the right books at the right time!
Saturday morning school begins at the start of Year 5. From the start of Year 6, children are required to stay at school for ‘Prep’. ‘Prep’ is done in school on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 5pm – 6pm. This encourages independent study and aids the acquisition of good strategies for learning.
Just as our Year 3s enjoy their added freedom, despite expecting more from our Year 5s, the Year 5s rise to the challenge and love the year.
Form teachers continue to play a key role in the pastoral care of Year 5 and 6 pupils. However, children in Year 6 are also assigned a Tutor to provide additional advice, encouragement and reassurance.
Various trips and camping experiences are arranged throughout the course of Years 5 & 6.
"Aside from the exceptional level of teaching, the care, thought and compassion that go into every single child at the school are inspiring."
