Boys’ Sport 12.12.25

Boy’s House Rugby

In the final week of term, boys from Years 3–8 took part in the annual House Rugby competitions, providing a superb celebration of teamwork, skill, and house spirit to round off the sporting year. Across all age groups, the enthusiasm, commitment, and quality of rugby on display reflected the hard work and progress made throughout the season.

The Year 7 & 8 boys competed in a fast-paced touch rugby tournament played in a round-robin format, with each house contesting five matches. The standard of play was consistently high, with quick hands, intelligent movement, and strong defensive organisation evident throughout. After a series of dominant performances, Yew House finished top of the table and were deservedly crowned winners of the Senior Rugby Trophy.

Due to waterlogged pitches on the North Lawn, the Year 5 & 6 competition was relocated to the astro. Houses were split into two pools, with each team playing two group matches before progressing to the play-offs. A rotating coaching session was built into the afternoon, giving pupils the opportunity to develop their handling and attacking skills between fixtures. Ash and Beech topped their respective pools and met in a thrilling first- and second-place play-off. The final was a breathless, end-to-end contest, finishing 25–25 after 16 minutes. Ash applied relentless pressure in the closing stages, camping on Beech’s try line, but a resilient and well-organised defensive effort held firm. In a fitting conclusion, the title was shared between Ash and Beech.

The following day, the Year 3 & 4 boys took to the field for their House rugby during the final Thursday Games session of the year. Playing a round-robin format with each house contesting five matches, the boys demonstrated impressive maturity and understanding of the game. Yew House set the tone with a convincing 20–5 victory in their opening fixture and went on to win all five matches to claim first place. Beech finished second, winning three, drawing one and losing one, while Cob placed third with two wins, two draws and one defeat.

From Year 3 through to Year 8, the boys have been outstanding throughout the year — training with focus, responding positively to feedback, and consistently transferring their learning into match situations. The rugby on display showcased not only technical improvement but also teamwork, resilience and sportsmanship. A fantastic way to conclude the year and a real testament to the boys’ commitment and enjoyment of the game.
