Senior 1st XI vs Claremont School
On a beautiful day, with a beautifully prepared pitch, the 1st X1 played their last match of the season. We won the toss and chose to bat. The pitch was perfect and Tommy P took full advantage. He scored the first hundred at Holmewood since 2014. It was an amazing innings and totally deserved. Well batted Tommy! We ended our innings on 141-6.
We kept the bowling as tight as possible, but it was Joseph A who turned everything around with bowling figures of 4 for 11. We bowled them out for 75 and therefore won by 66 runs.
This has been a fantastic cricket season and what a fitting way for the year 8 boys to finish their last match at Holmewood!
Senior 4th XI vs Claremont School
An outstanding match with an incredible finish to end the season. Having set 91 as a target, with Maxim and Jason hitting some fine 6’s, the last Claremont pair began the final over with a lead of 10. Then, miraculously, George bowled a hat-trick – Claremont trailing by 5. With one ball remaining, Claremont had tied the scores at 91 each, before a final shot that was so nearly a catch and a victory…but not quite. A great game played in great spirit.
U11A vs Lingfield College Prep
The U11A team hosted Lingfield for their final match of the season, with the squad featuring all our departing Year 6 pupils—a fitting way to celebrate their final game for Holmewood.
Batting first, Louis S and Edmund gave the team a flying start, putting on 50 runs in the first five overs. Louis batted with confidence and retired after an excellent 30, while Edmund contributed a well-made 19 before being caught. Ethan (26*) and Freddy (11*) continued the momentum, both retiring to allow others the chance to bat. As the innings drew to a close, a couple of late wickets fell with Raife W caught and Joel bowled, but Hugo and Oli guided the side to a competitive total of 130 from 16 overs.
In the field, Holmewood started brilliantly, with Raife B securing a runout in the very first over. Despite an inconsistent first over, Oscar tightened things up superbly in his second. Raife JT added another runout in the fifth over to keep the pressure on. Lingfield built some momentum and began swinging freely, keeping themselves in the hunt. However, key wickets from Louis and Freddy B (three in total) taking a key batter with them.
With Lingfield needing eight runs from the final over, the atmosphere was tense. Louis and the team held their nerve superbly—despite a small fielding mishap—and delivered two outstanding final balls to win the game by 5 runs.
A brilliant finish to a hugely successful season. Well done, boys!
U10A vs Lingfield College Prep
The final curtain on the season came to a close as the team came up against Lingfield. Batting first Holmewood House got off to a flyer and in particular Alex who scored a very quickfire 22 from just 16 balls and included 5 boundaries as he managed to find a rather small boundary. Unfortunately a mix up between Alex and Arthur meant Alex was run out when he would have surely gone on to retirement, In Alex’s absence, the run rate while perhaps not as prolific continued to stay around the 10 runs per over. Good contributions from Arthur, Will and a cameo by Edgar at the end meant that the side posted an impressive 154 from their 16 overs.
This was a target that Lingfield never looked like threatening with a tidy opening spell by Henry and Orlando restricted them to 24 off the first 4 overs. With the rest of the overs spread equally the team has shown that they have great depth in their bowling attack. Mention to Louis for his 1 wicket for just 1 run, Sebastian for conceding just 2 runs off his over and Alex who bowled a very quickfire maiden meant the team restricted Lingfield to just 91 runs. Albert did an amazing job as captain as this was an area that was once again rotated around the squad.
The end of the season has seen the team win 3 out of their last 4 games which shows the progress they have made this year. I will look forward to seeing how they can continue this progress next year.
U9 Sussex vs St Michael’s Prep School
Against a very strong St Michael’s team, Holmewood House struggled against some very good and accurate bowling. There were a few run outs which is an area that the team will need to work on. It was always going to be a challenge to defend a small target and if we thought that St Michael’s bowling was impressive, then this was eclipsed by their powerful hitting. Flynn bowled accurately but was not enough to contain the opposition. Emilio showed some promise with the bat as he scored a couple of boundaries. For next year, there are a few areas to work on including running between the wickets which proved to be a challenge in this game. Well done to everyone who has played this year with some encouraging signs that they can improve their results for next year.
U9 Kent vs St Michael’s Prep School
Holmewood House bowled first against a confident St Michael’s team, who ran well between the wickets and struck the ball with power from the start. Charlie and Tommy steadied the ship during their spells, applying pressure on the batters, claiming a runout, and restricting the scoring to just three runs across two overs. Despite this, St Michael’s continued to build their total, and a few overthrows—including one that went for four—allowed them to keep the scoreboard ticking. While there were moments of excellent fielding, we struggled to take further wickets and break their momentum.
In reply, William M and Freddie R opened the batting brightly, scoring quickly, but an early wicket meant we were 10 runs behind after two overs. Misfortune struck again as Charlie J and Tommy lost two unfortunate wickets, but a few well-timed boundaries brought us back to within five runs of St Michael’s total after four overs. Teddy and Eddie ran hard between the wickets, but consistent bowling from St Michael’s restricted extras and boundaries in the closing stages.
Despite the boys’ best efforts, the early wickets and missed opportunities in the field made the chase difficult, and we finished 23 runs short. It was a competitive match, and although both teams looked strong, St Michael’s were able to capitalise on key moments to secure their win.
Plenty of positives to take forward—well done, boys, for your effort and resilience throughout the season.
U8 vs St Michael’s Prep School
The U8s hosted St Michael’s for their final match of the season, marking the end of a term where the pupils have shown excellent development and growing confidence in their cricket. It has been fantastic to see their skills and understanding of the game improve, and they have enjoyed a series of competitive matches along the way.
Thank you to all the players for their enthusiasm and effort throughout the season. We now look forward to House Cricket next Thursday to round off a brilliant term of cricket for the U8s!
