Shooting Match vs New Beacon

Having been used to two to three shooting matches per term, we have been unable to do so since Covid for a variety of reasons. It was, therefore, so good to have the New Beacon school at Holmewood this week. All sports are not intended to be done in isolation and shooting is no exception.

The New Beacon team comprised eight Year Six boys who had two terms of shooting experience.  Currently Holmewood have only one Year Six shooter (Louis Campbell- Johnson), and two Year Five shooters with just one term’s experience (Albert Oliver and Zachary Hyams). We also have four Year Fives who have just started this term and are only three weeks into their training and so couldn’t really take part in the competition.

Louis was the shooter of the event achieving the best grouping and while shooting unsupported (using a sling). All of the New Beacon team used a shooting support as did the rest of the Holmewood team. Albert also achieved the maximum score for grouping with Zachary not very far behind.

Comparing our three with the best three from New Beacon, Holmewood had the edge, particularly with Louis shooting unsupported. I look forward to the Holmewood team developing and gradually building back to the high level of achievement we had in the past. Malcolm Priestly

U13A vs  Brighton College

The 1st XIII played their final fixture in the longer format of the game in a triangular v 2 teams from Brighton College and Lewes Grammer School. Having arrived late, they started off against one of the Brighton College teams and they hit the ground running with a steady flow of tries coming from a number of the players. Tommy controlled the game well at fly half which allowed the team to identify where they needed to attack. Following on from that victory the team played Lewes and again scored a steady flow of tries that came as a result of some strong running by the likes of Will and also from turnovers coming from Joseph. As the weather deteriorated the final game v another Brighton side was scrappy and some opportunities were lost due to the slippery ball. However, what was pleasing was that despite not scoring as many in this last game, they still did not concede a try which is something the team has worked very hard on. The progress that they have made in the last few weeks has been so pleasing to see and the boys should be proud of their performances.

U11A vs Skippers Hill Manor Preparatory School

In an exciting season opener, the U11A boys put on a thrilling display against Skippers Hill, narrowly losing 3-2. The match was end-to-end, showcasing fantastic skill, slick passing, and determined play from both sides. Our boys worked tirelessly, creating chances and defending bravely. Despite a strong effort and two well-taken goals, Skippers Hill edged the result. A promising start, despite only having one practice, with plenty of positives to build on for the season ahead! Well played boys. DG

U11B vs Skippers Hill Manor Preparatory School

How lovely it was to get the season underway with a match against Skipper’s Hill. With just one training session under their belt, the boys passed the ball around effectively and were confident on the ball, tackled strongly, attacked the D with gusto and took their chances well, when they came. What was perhaps most pleasing was the link up play, the distribution and boys trying to provide width our wide on the flanks. It was a fine game and the boys thoroughly deserved their 3—1 win. What a great start to the season – well played boys and so now it is on to our next match next Wednesday, after the cross country on Monday. Keep enjoying your hockey, boys – it was fun! PMJ

U11C vs Skippers Hill Manor Preparatory School

Following on from the B match, the C team eagerly awaited their chance and they did not disappoint. It was another super, end to end game with chances at either end and some great defending on both sides, as there were no goalkeepers. Skipper’s Hill stuck away 2 chances and led 2-0 and then Holmewood House came right back into it, by scoring a fabulous, well taken goal to make it 2-1. Game on and with 5 minutes to go, the Holmewood team peppered the goal with shots, but could not quite find the back of the net. A narrow 2-1 defeat but a really great effort by all and super learning. There are so many positives to take from the match, as we move forward to the next training session and indeed match. Well done and keep enjoying your hockey, boys. PMJ

U9A vs Dulwich Cranbrook

The U9 boys had a fantastic afternoon of hockey against Dulwich Prep Cranbrook, playing across four pitches with everyone getting involved. Each match lasted 10 minutes, allowing plenty of game time and excitement. Across four matches, the boys showed great enthusiasm, teamwork, and determination. There were some excellent passes, strong tackles, and plenty of goals, making it an enjoyable and competitive afternoon. The sunny weather made for perfect playing conditions, and it was a brilliant way to kick off the season. A great start, with lots of promise for the matches ahead!

Well played everyone!
