Music Scholars’ Showcase Concert
This Monday we were treated to some truly wonderful performances by our Year 8 music scholarship candidates Xavi and Elena who were preceded by three Year 7 pupils who have been taking part in the scholarship readiness program.
First up was Alicia who dazzled us with her violin playing and her piano. Matilda performed a great rendition of Boyce’s Menuet which was followed by Joshua who demonstrated his diversity on piano, oboe and voice finishing off with a heartfelt performance of “Caro mio ben” with impeccable Italian!
Not to be outdone in the diversity stakes, Xavier sang two contrasting numbers with his rich, newly developing tenor voice before seating himself at the piano for his performance of Chopin’s Valse in A minor. He concluded with some magnificent French horn playing of the much loved “Nina” by Pergolesi followed by a remarkable performance of the infamous Mozart Rondo!
Our final performer of the evening was Elena whose vivacious rendition of the 3rd movement of one of Vivaldi’s violin concertos set the tone for her entire performance. The Vivaldi was contrasted by the drama and chromaticism of Smetana which Elena played masterfully on a violin that didn’t quite look big enough to produce such a vibrant sound! And finally as Elena took her seat at the piano we waited with baited breath to see what magic she would now produce. We were certainly not to be disappointed as her fingers danced across the keys in both the Clementi and the Debussy which finished with a triumphant flourish which left everyone wanting more!
The concert was well attended and it was a joy to see our pupils supporting each other at this event. Lydia Carter
